New requisition practice for patient travels

01 October 2025 | Country Update

From 1 April 2025, a new requisition practice for patient travel has been introduced. Patients who are unable to travel by public transport or ordinary car are eligible for patient travel services. Previously, health professionals were responsible for booking patients’ travel. The new requisition practice enables patients to book necessary travel themselves through their health portal or by calling a central helpline, as long as a travel certificate documenting their need for assistance has been issued. The new measure increases patients’ control and responsibility over their care pathway. Early reports also indicate a reduction in wasted trips, due to either faults in ordering or cancellation of trips. The change is enabled through digitalized processes and is expected to reduce the total time spent on organizing transport for patients. The option to call a helpline ensures equal access to care for those who are less digitally enabled, and has been positively welcomed by senior citizens.
